Room 7 "Clock Out" Blog Post

Welcome to Room 7 "Clock Out" for Week 8.

Use this time now to complete the following:

#1: Friday PM Learning Logs

#2: Create a new blog post sharing something amazing you have done this week

What are you sharing?

Why is this important to you?

Don't forget to add your digital learning object (see mine below)

#3: Have a crack at the Friday PM animals meme on your slide.

If you've done all of the above, go leave some lovely comments on the blogs of our mates in Belfast School, Ruapotaka or otherwise.

Done that? Awesome! Go and find your "secret object" and get ready for Fun Friday!

This is some of the learning my students did in one of their maths workshops with Mrs Allan earlier today. It is about factorising algebraic expressions.

This is important to me because it says how willing some of my class are to push themselves to learn in maths. We haven't covered it in class but I'm glad to see them giving new and challenging mathematical ideas a crack.

It is also important because it highlights what they're capable of when expanding or factorising algebraic equations. This lesson also taught me that my class still needs to learn their times tables, common multiples and factors.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori: Whakatauki

Whakataukī (proverbs) represent the wisdom guiding the Maori culture.
They are commonly used as inspirations in speeches and also as gentle reminders spoken to each other in everyday life. They are poetic expressions of wise sayings which allude to symbols native to Aotearoa.

Kia ora whanau! The following example and instructions are one of this week's writing tasks, which also links very well to te wiki o te reo Maori and our own hauora.

You have to select a whakatauki you resonate with, what it basically means and describe how you show this in your own life. What is a whakatauki you can relate to?

What do you meme?

This task is a bit of fun we've been having online in Room 7.
We've taken funny pictures of animals and turned them into memes.
It's not an idea we originally came up with (it's from TikTok) but it's definitely one we're enjoying!

Cybersmart Challenge #22: Empowerment

Empowerment is defined as the "authority or power given to someone to do something".

This challenge advises students what they should do when they encounter comments on their blog posts, emails or documents which may not be positive, helpful and thoughtful; comments which could make us feel hurt or not safe.

It is important that you do not reply to these messages. Take a screenshot, include the URL of your post or document and email these to your teacher.

Room 7
What should you do when you receive comments which are not positive, helpful, thoughtful?
What's something important that you learned from doing this challenge?

Term 3 Week 7: Room 7's Home Learning

Room 7 30-Second News: Our news brought to you by the voice recordings of Room 7! Check for "Term 3 Week 7"

Room 7 Maths Slide Deck: This week, my class have been learning about gradients and algebra with Mrs Allan. They were clever enough to also explain to me what exactly they had been doing. Check out the first couple of slides below.

Room 7 Reading Slide Deck: This week we practised identifying the meaning of words in the context given, and explored why "texting is better than talking". Would you agree?

Room 7 Writing Slide Deck:  We went on a "Musical Adventure" this week, listening to different songs and identifying the different emotions, memories and feelings we associate with each song. It was a challenging one for my class because it wasn't what they usually listen to. Did you know, music we enjoy that is uplifting and enjoyable can help us when we're feeling down about things?

Term 3 Week 6: Monday Home Learning

We have started this week on a very positive note with lots of quality learning happening. We were online in video meetings a lot more as a class with two check in sessions and two workshops for writing, reading and maths. One meeting merged very well into the next.

Whether we're at home or school, I'm trying to teach my students to use the following phrases while learning:

What am I learning?

Why am I learning this?

How do I know when I've learned this?

What were my success and challenges today?

In each of our literacy and numeracy classes, we will be starting our own records for learning by using Google Slides. Most of my students did not have their books with them on the last day we were at school so we've had to find another way to track our learning. The example slide decks below are my examples to students how they can track the progress, successes and goals of the learning during Level 4.

Writing: We have some very descriptive pieces about the takeaways we're missing written as 50-word stories.

Maths: This week, we are revisiting how to use our multdiv basic facts to find fractions of a set or number.

Cybersmart Challenge #19: Google Meet Ready

This is my finished example of this week's Cybersmart Challenge. Thank you Mr Ferguson for posting the challenge, it was fairly easy to follow and create. I'm sure my class will also have theirs ready by the end of this week.

I liked this challenge because it was interactive, easy enough but also a fantastic way to remind students (and me!) of some basics when meeting online. Have you completed your challenge?

Mathigon tutorial by Mrs Allan

Today, Mrs Allan lead a session on Mathigon. I had a go on practising some new numbers and strategies. This is my "drawboard".

My class are trying to get better at the speed and recall of their multiplication basic facts. I think this site will be a really great way to help them learn and memorise their tables.

Term 3 Week 5 Home Learning: Writing Examples for 50-Word Story and Film Review

Hey Room 7, here are my examples of the two pieces of writing we're working on this week.

Try to get at least one done for the week. See our T3 writing modelling doc for the originals.

Term 3 Week 5 at Level 4

It's no secret by now that you'll know we've all been at home the last few days. We're gutted but we're not gonna let that keep us down!

Room 7 and Ruapotaka School's Home Learning officially kicked off today. After a week away from each other in class, it was really great to see ourselves in today's class Google Meetings. We're enjoying the sleep ins, staying up late, more time with family and change of pace. We all agreed that we definitely miss the face to face conversations with friends and teachers, and learning in a classroom.

Kahoot! became a regular occurence in our last online meetings, so much so I forgot all about it! I was able to cue up a couple of games, and if you know us, we're Marvel fans ... the scores in our first game didn't show this though. We've got some sharpening up to do so I might need to assign a Marvel film study.

Yes, Room 7, who is this??

This slide is the end product from our celebration of Cook Island Language Week a few weeks ago. I'm really proud of this because there are several examples of learning my class and I were able to utilise - Mr Goodwin's remove.bg lesson, Cook Island phrases, downloading and uploading images, formatting images to fit. Pakau - awesome!

Our last Cybersmart session was with Mr Goodwin, who showed us how to create our own 8-bit art. Everyone had to create Mario first before making their own creations. We had some really cool examples from Hone, Jairus and Willie, just to name a few. The pic below is one Renei and I worked on together.

"It's a-me, Mario!"

Term 2 Week 3: Life so far in Room 7

Kia orana!

Our start to the term has been action packed with learning about the Olympics and the different countries, sports and athletes involved.

Willie says “I’ve been enjoying the 30-second news we’ve been writing about in class. This has helped my ability to speak more confidently because I have to share my news in front of my classmates”.

Renei is currently working on a Minecraft task related to our class novel, Refugee by Alan Gratz. “I’m enjoying the help we’ve been getting from classmates. I also feel a lot more comfortable helping them with their learning”. Take a look at Jairus' models of the MS St Louis and a concentration camp.

We're continuing the greatness of Cook Island Language week and will be creating our own comic book phrases like the one linked below. I think my message would have greater impact if I'd smiled.

The Manaiakalani Film Festival is happening soon and we’re keen to get our idea established and started - watch this space!

I hope you've all had a safe and happy start to Term 3 - looking forward to who wins this week's Cybersmart Challenge!
