Cybersmart: Taika and Mr N filming Boy Sequel for Manaiakalani Film Festival

Kia ora, my name is Mr N. This is my friend Taika and here is showing off his cool Grammy Award. We are here at Te Oro in Glen Innes filming the sequel to his Wellywood blockbuster, Boy. Part two will be called, "Girl".*

I learned how to create this image today by removing the backgrounds of myself and my cool friend. I took a screenshot of a local place of interest in Glen Innes, which is actually where a lot of dance, drama, music and performing arts takes place. This pic was all collated and edited on Google Drawing. I really enjoyed the humour, creativity and skill I used to complete this task. If I could work on anything, it would be to use a clearer, less 'foggier' picture of me.

Thanks in advance for your comments - please also be sure to have a look at the other Room 7 (and Room 1) students who also created their own pieces.

*disclaimer: Taika isn't actually filming with me - he's way too busy filming Thor: Love and Thunder at the moment.

Literacy: Room 7's 30-second News

Kia ora koutou! Today we picked a news item from the past 48 hours (except Ocean) and created a quick 30-second news presentation. Each student present in class today had to list the news item they were reporting on, along with relevant images and verbally shared their piece to classmates.

Literacy: Caged Bird - Literal Analysis

 Hey team

Good session today about our feature poem for reading, Caged Bird, and the literal meaning of each stanza. We analysed each stanza and almost every line to understand what the 'basic' meaning of the poem is.

Could you please leave a comment regarding what you think this poem could really be about:

* What, or who, do you think is represented by the free bird and the caged bird?

* What links can you make between your own life, or the world around you, and Caged Bird?

Regards

Mr N

Cybersmart Writing Session: What If?

Today's writing session was a fun and silly one. Writing can be fun and silly, but things that shouldn't be silly in our writing includes accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar - thanks for lesson and reminder, Mr Goodwin!

Over the next few days, Room 7 will also be writing their own "What if" experiences. Please keep an eye out for their pieces of writing - enjoy!

My Grandad's Hands

This week's writing task was a free-verse poem about "my grandad's hands". We practised using semi-colons, a range of sentence lengths and using better vocabulary. Our poems are based on an original poem written by Gary O'Connell. I chose to write about my grandad because he was someone very special to me.

My Grandad's Hands by Mr N

My grandad's hands

are wrinkly boulders;

his back, a sturdy wall;

his legs, speedy twigs.

His laugh is Mufasa's roar;

his breath, dust in the breeze.

Driving

his last 757 route on a bright yellow bus,

my grandad

is on his way back to the terminal.

About Me 2021

Kia ora tatou! In today's Cybersmart session, we updated our profiles. We revisited the importance of what we choose to share when writing about ourselves online. What we think is funny now could change when we get older. We have to make sure we put ourselves in the best possible, positive and professional light. Be sure to read up on the rest of Room 7's profiles!

Have a great day - Mr N

 Kia ora, fakaalofa lahi atu, how’s it goin’! My name is Mr Nevalagi. I am a Year 7&8 teacher at Ruapotaka School in Room 7.

Both of my parents from the small but mighty island of Niue in the South Pacific,  also known as Niue, the Rock of Polynesia. I am the eldest of four siblings and have two younger half sisters in Australia. I have a lot of nieces and nephews who are lots of fun to hang out with. Last but not least, I am engaged to my lovely fiancé, Angela.

I enjoy playing video games and have been a gamer since the early days of Nintendo, Sega Mega Drive and the humble coin-op machines at your local fish and chip store. I like reading sophisticated picture books. I enjoy watching action movies and anime. I need background music in most settings to help me concentrate.

While I don’t play a lot of sports now, I definitely watch and follow a range of sports like rugby league, rugby, netball and American Football. I love cooking and trying new foods from a range of countries and cultures. Go the mighty NZ Warriors!

Term 2 Week 1: Welcome Back!

Kia ora, Ruma Whitu!

First of all, welcome back to school! We've had three days in class and probably had one of the most productive and busiest starts to the term.

Just wanted to say a MASSIVE thank you to the Y7&8 boys and girls who trialled for football today.

I could tell you were all excited and looking forward to it. What I'm really impressed with is the patience, skill, care and respect for others and teamwork you showed during your trials. If your football skill was already good enough, you've made my job for selecting teams a lot harder with your genuine support for one another. Shout out to Fabian, Pita and Poni for their positive sportsmanship during gameplay, as well as our girls for holding their own against the boys.

What have you enjoyed so far about being back at school?

All the best for your first week back :)
